Episode 306: Stop Sabotaging Your Productivity

1 Simple Thing Action:
Work your “focus muscle.” When you are constantly distracted, quiet, focused times will feel unnatural, and you’ll have a tendency to seek the comfort zone of distraction. Set a timer for 10 minutes free from distraction. Gradually increase the time until you are comfortable staying focused and undistracted for an hour or more. You can use guided meditations apps and practice being still.

Episode 307: Take control of your technology

1 Simple Thing Action:
Take control of your technology. Learn how to use the “Do Not Disturb” feature on your phone. Try setting it to silent without vibrate. Turn it off or put it in airplane mode when you go to bed so that it won’t interrupt your sleep. Turn off notifications from apps and email. On your computer, work in offline mode so that email isn’t constantly downloading. Remember that your devices are there for your convenience.

Episode 308: Stop the mental chatter

Regain control over the details of your life and work by centralizing everything you need to do in one place: a good electronic task list. Try Wunderlist or Handle.

Episode 309: Tools are only half of the solution

1 Simple Thing Action:
Do a brain dump or a brain purge. Go some place quiet with a pad of paper and a pen, and write down everything that is swirling around in your head. Don’t try to organize or censor yourself while writing, just try to generate a free flow of thought. If it’s on your mind, write it all down – only one line per item.

Once everything is right out there in front of you, then you can deal with it. We keep so much of information locked in our head, but the truth is you can only truly manage what you can see, and you can only see what’s outside your head. So get it all out on paper (or screen), so you can organize and act upon it appropriately.
