Most of us have only experienced the negative type of networking. Standing around at a party handing out business cards to people you don’t know, hoping to find a needle client in the haystack. On this episode, Dave highlights some of the un-networking strategies Derek Coburn shared in episodes 311-314 from his book, “Networking Is Not Working: Stop Collecting Business Cards and Start Making Meaningful Connections.”

Episode 311: How to Stand apart from your competition

1 Simple Thing Action:
The Ultimate Tiebreaker. Look at your existing clients whose primary source of business is through client acquisition or meeting new relationships, and start focusing more on adding value to your relationship with them, above and beyond what you are currently doing. Take it on yourself to learn what their ideal client might look like, so when you are growing your network you can easily spot potential opportunities and make good introductions on behalf of your clients.

Episode 312: Networking 3.0

1 Simple Thing Action:
Focus your networking efforts on helping your existing network, not yourself or the person you are meeting for the first time. Learn from your clients and existing network the keywords and buzz phrases that their ideal customers would use. When you recognize an opportunity, either online or at an event, you can be proactive and make that valuable connection immediately.

Episode 313: How To Build a Valuable Network

1 Simple Thing Action:
Make it easy for others who want to help you. For example, if you want someone to introduce you to one of their relationships, create a short, pre-written introduction template that can be copied & pasted easily on an email.

Episode 314: Trigger Ongoing Reciprocation

1 Simple Thing Action:
Make it easy for your raving fans to help you. Find creative ways for them to be able to respond to your focus on them. But you must always keep your focus on truly trying to create value for others, instead of a “what’s in it for me” mentality.
